My Web Development Journey

Hi, I am Colin Guild, the creator of Webstar Designs and also the founder of this website. This thread is all about my progress finding web design clients, building websites and more. So far I am working on two websites and have a good understanding of web design and development but I am still relatively new and working towards finding more businesses to work with.
Some things that I am trying so far to find clients is cold calling/emailing, growing a social media profile, and reaching out to friends. The goal of this thread is to help others who are in a similar position or are just starting out and also keep track of what I am doing on a day-to-day basis. If you have any input or suggestions please comment below!

Attached are some websites I have made

Sharing links to your blog on Twitter can be challenging. I\'ve been using a few different strategies to share links and trying to figure out which ones work best.

I\'ve tried using Direct Messaging to share links, pinning links to my profile, and commenting on other posts in my niche and asking users to check out my profile and sign up. Although I don\'t feel that I have enough reference points yet, I do have some insights on what is working so far.

Direct Messaging: This is by far the most effective strategy for me. Whenever someone DM\'s me about how they found my content, it\'s always because I messaged them about it! The downside is that it takes time to message every single person who follows you, but it\'s worth it if you have time or a team willing to help you out.

Commenting on other posts: This is another good strategy that has worked well for me. When someone comments on one of your posts or asks you a question about something related to your niche, reply with a link! It shows them that you\\\'re responsive and interested in helping them learn more about the topic at hand! Also, if someone has reached out for advice or information about something specific, sharing relevant content will likely be appreciated. You can even search Twitter for people asking questions related to your niche and respond to them with an answer and a link to your blog for more information. The most important thing is to not be spammy.

You should also be frequently posting your blog. Everytime you make a new post it should be shared with summary of what the post is about with some helpful information thrown in. The purpose is to give people a taste of how the post will help solve an issue or entertain them and leave them wanting more.

For example, if you\'re writing about something to do with finance, you could tweet out a short summary of what the post is about, then throw in some random fact that you think would be interesting. You can also tweet out old blog posts every once in a while and change up the summary to see what yields the best results.

I am going to update everyone on which strategy works the best after a few months. Right now my page visits aren\'t great but I have noticed an uptick since I have been using these strategies. I am also going to be testing out some other strategies that I have read about online. I will keep you guys posted on how those go!

#4 How I Grew My Twitter Account to 1,000 Followers in 2022

I've finally reached 1,000 followers on Twitter. This seems like the perfect time to share what I've learned from my time spent on Twitter, which has been a big part of my life lately, and also reflect on what it really means to have followers.

When I first started using Twitter, I didn't have any real idea of what to do or how to be effective in my interactions with others who were using the platform as well. To a large extent, I am still learning.

I think that one of the most important things you can do when you first start using Twitter is ask yourself: why am I here? What do I want out of this experience? Why should anyone care about what I have to say? These questions will help you figure out where your interests lie so that you can make sure they align with whatever goals are important to you.

Beyond that, there are some simple strategies I used to gain followers relatively fast. In the beginning a decent amount of my following came from follow for follow (f4f). This is a tactic where you follow a bunch of people in your niche so that you show up in thier notifications and a certain percentage follow back. If you do this, make sure you keep it under 20 follows per hour or your account could get shadowbanned. These rules may change now that Elon Musk is in charge but as of now I believe it still stands. Also, I make it a habit to unfollow 20 people who aren't following back at the same time unless it's an account I enjoy. Make sure you scroll down a bit when you do this so you are unfollowing people that have had at least a few days to follow back and again, keep it under 20 unfollows per hour.

This strategy worked great for gaining followers but the problem I was running into was my engagement wasn't there. I was getting more engagement than when I started but not enough to make it worth it. I have changed my strategy to engaging with other people's content more. I'll find an account that has somewhere between 1-10k followers and comment on one of their posts in a way that is retweetable. This way, my post is more likely to get likes, shares, and start up a conversation. I then follow everyone who engages with my post and I end up with more followers who actually engage. Don't get me wrong, I still do f4f but not as much and I stick to following people who have liked or commented on somebody else's post instead of just going through a random account's following list.

My next goal is to get more people over to this site from Twitter. I am workimg on some strategies to do so but haven't found one that is consistent just yet although I have seen some spikes when I post a link to the site in a reply. The only problem is, it's hard to find situations where it is okay to do that without being spammy.

I hope this helped somebody looking to grow thier account. It's definitely more fun now than when I had no followers and met some great people along the way.

This week I have been working on different ways to approach potential clients. I have only started testing this idea yesterday but the conversations seem to be going a bit better. While it is usually recommended to get paid first and then do the work, when you are first starting out it may be better to do the work first and get paid after. I will explain why in this post.

The one thing that freelancers must have to get clients is trust. Unless you are an elite level salesperson, it is very hard to gain trust unless you have proof of work. This is especially true because business owners tend to be very protective of their work and rightfully so. If you ask for money upfront with no proof of work, the potential client will likely be thinking these things.

"What if I send the money and this person disappears?"
"What if they aren't good and I can't get a refund?"

Would you send some random person money who emails you or calls you on the phone but doesn't offer examples of clients they have helped? I hope not.

This is why when you are first trying to get your initial clients, it is best to tell them that you will do all the work up front. Since I am doing web design, I will tell the client that they don't have to pay me until after the work is done. If I finish the site and you like it, you'll pay X amount of dollars and I will set up your site and domain. If not, you don't have to pay me and all that I ask for is to allow me to put the site in my portfolio. This is a win win situation for both of us because the client isn't obligated to pay me anything and at the very least I get to put another site on my portfolio and best case scenario I get a new client to work with.

Now, there is a disclaimer. As you grow and gain more trust within your network, it is best to get paid first so you don't waste your time. You will now have the ability to do this effectively because clients are reaching out to you who already trust you and your work.

This week, I reached out to a couple businesses and was able to get a time to call back and owner name for one of them. I also made a YouTube video that is scheduled to post today at 5 about growing small Twitter accounts and adopting new strategies as the account grows. Here is the link to my channel!

I am trying to think of ways to get more people interested in my web design services by offering it in a way that shows how it will grow revenue. I am considering offering websites and social media management as a bundle to make it more clear how the website will increase sales.

I plan on working out a good pitch for this to finish out the week and I have one more call to make as well.
